Lost review for October 4, 2006

Lost has returned, and so has my Lost reviews (even though I'm on vacation). I was lucky enough to be able to do my presentation and get back in time to watch the premier.

The episode began with what appears to be a nice suburban setting. A women who is obviously unhappy in general is leading a book club. All of a sudden there is an earthquake and she runs out, along with other people along the street.

We see Henry from the Others, and the original Other we met (forgot his name), and then we see the plane with the original cast aways breaking. I thought I saw something odd about the plane, but it was hard to tell.

So a lot right away: The Others have a very nice, suburban style neighborhood. The Others were not expecting the plane crash, but seemed unsurprised by it. Henry said it was a "good" one. We know Dharma used the island due to it's "special" properties, so maybe this is just what it does - draws things to it.

The rest of episode shows the prisons for Jack, Sawyer, and Kate. Jack is a glassed in cell that is underwater. A location known as the Hydra. Sawyer is in a prison outside. Did anyone catch the Dharma logo there? It looked like it could be a Hydra. Anyway, the scenes with Sawyer were a bit to short. As for Kate, well, she had a dinner with Henry, and he just warned her that the next two weeks would be difficult.

So I'm leaving out some of the details - but I'm tired and it's my vacation, so this one will be short. I'm very happy that this season is focusing on the Others as I absolutely love them, especially Ben (Henry's real name as we find out by the end of the episode). The back story this time was a bit weak. I don't know why but I just didn't care for it a lot. Ok - that's it. As a general reminder for my readers, I'm on vacation all this week so won't be back to regular postings till next Monday.

I was glad to get explanations (sortof) for the polar bears and sharks. The guy who locked Sawyer up said "it only took the bear two hours" to figure out the food thing. So maybe the bears escaped and ended up at the camp in Season 1. Then the lady holding Jack hostage replied "and dolphins too" when Jack asked if his giant aquarium cell used to hold sharks. That might explain the sharks at the beginning of Season 2 with the Dharma logo on them.

Wow, what a fun start to the season!

The "other" Other at the beginning of tonight's episode is Ethan I believe. :-)

Was the scene on the beach green screened? Were they in Los Angeles?

I didnt notice any Hanso commercials.... has all of that stopped or did I just miss them?

1) The Others call Henry byt a different name, Ben.

2) It was obvious they, or at least Ben, was prepared for the crash. He qquickly dispatched Ethan and Goodwin to bland in and get hime 'lists in 3 days'

3) Anyone else catch the 'you're not my type' from 'Zeke' when Kate said she would not shower in front of him? Could have numerous meetings.

Also, we all assumed the plane crash was flight 815, but it is never really specified.

There were some things about Juliet's actions with Jack too that seemed to me that she'd been through all this before and was tired of it. And she doesn't quite seem to fit in with the others - preferring Steven King to more literary works, burning the muffins, getting left behind by Henry er Ben when the water floods the room - that sort of thing.

Her actions during that book club scene and the look she gave "BEN/Henry" gave me the impression that if anyone was going to help them out it would be her.

Ray, you're forgetting some big details!.. the earthquake was the result of Desmond not entering the numbers in time..remember? That created the force that pulled the plane down. So not really an earthquake. So the island doesn't draw things in (by itself that is). And what about the allusion to to everything being 'all about Jack'? I thougt that was a pretty big detail.

As Rich stated, I think the plane was drawn in. It also looked to have some visual smearing to it--like it was warped in time or something.

And, as Dan correctly pointed out, everyone knows that things in a time warp look smeared ;-).

I think what Ray heard as "good one" was Ben's directions to Goodwin to run to the tail section. My wife heard that too.

I don't believe the Others knew the earthquake/plane crash was going to happen - they just weren't surprised by it. Ie, they knew it COULD happen. Does that distinction make sense?

I don't quite get why not pushing the buttons would ALSO work as a 'Suck people in' mechanism. You would think that Dharma would want to control that (ie, use it when they need more subjects).

I'm going to watch my DVR copy tonight to see more of the smear.

I think the "smearing" was just a bad special effect!

The island seems to be drawing more "subjects" in. As you say Ray. the others were not surprised that the plane could crash.... and reacted very quickly.

All-in-all tho, not a brilliant episode i didn't think. Anyone?

I missed the first half. Had to watch South Park.

I agree - not "brilliant", but darn good. Of course, the _best_ Lost episodes are extremely good so my standards are high. I will bet though that BSG will be better.

Gary Funk can watch the episode at <a href="http://dynamic.abc.go.com/streaming/landing"&...; for free. Smart move by ABC. Note, they only give access to the 3 most recent shows.

Some observations: Speaker in Jack's cell was his dad's voice saying "Let it go Jack"
The book club was <a href="http://blog.siliconholler.com/2006/10/05/lost-spoi... Carrie</a>.

Thanks for that djuggler. Please note you can't use HTML here. Next time just put your url in like so:

You can find foo at CNN (http://www.cnn.com).

What, no children at the other's camp? Another clue to why they are so interested in Claire's baby?

Also noted the CD player, collection, and SK's book at the very beginning ...

Did anyone else catch the odd hand gesture, complete with a "beat" or two in the action, that the woman (forget the name) made when talking to Jack.....almost as if she was saying one thing, but meant him to hear something else. Jack reacts to it. Not sure what it meant, if anything.
